Who We Are?

We are a suburban, family church in the heart of Claremont, Cape Town. Our sole purpose is to reach out with the message of Jesus Christ in order to ‘make visible the grace of an invisible God’.

Our community is a home where together we grow in faith, reach up to God in worship and reach out to the community at large.

Statement of Faith

We believe that “all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true.” 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)

We believe “it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 2:8,9 (NIV)

  • God the Father as creator of everything, eternal, all knowing, all powerful, all holy and righteous, loving, merciful, compassionate and gracious
  • Jesus while fully God became fully human, lived a life without sin and died on the cross to pay the price for our sin and rose from the dead. As we believe and trust in Him as our Saviour we are fully reconciled to a Holy God.
  • God has sent His Holy Spirit to all believers to guide, lead and empower us to live a righteous and abundant life and to share His love and the good news of salvation through Jesus with others.

History

  • 1927

    Craven Hall built

Beatrice Finch purchased the plot of land between Franklin and Markham Road and in 1927 she had Craven Hall built. She used the hall to share the Gospel with children in the neighbourhood.

  • 1931

    Services Commenced

Miss Finch started services for the adult community in Craven Hall, thereby establishing East Claremont Congregational Church.

  • 1935

    Minor Hall was built

The Minor hall was built behind Craven Hall, from funds collected by the congregation. It was used for the Children’s Church.

A lovely little Nursery School called Dove Cottage currently runs from there.

  • 1968

    A New Church Building

A new church building, offices and classrooms were built on two adjoining plots with money donated by the Congregants of East Claremont Congregational Church.
  • 2022

Renovations to Craven Hall and Kitchen completed

Rev Alex Harrower and his wife Linda, encouraged a huge clean-up of the premises post-Covid lockdown and with accumulated finances, the church was able to renovate Craven Hall and modernise the Kitchen. The carved plasterwork framing the kitchen hatch was the brainchild of David Snyders and has been a beautiful final touch to a job well done.
